Slow Cooker Mississippi Chicken
This tender Mississippi Chicken combines chicken breasts and pepperoncini peppers, prepared in a creamy brown gravy. It’s the poultry version of the classic Mississippi Pot Roast that uses chuck roast.

Here’s the basic list of ingredients you’ll need in order to whip up this Slow Cooker Mississippi Chicken. As always, you can find the full list of ingredients located in the printable recipe card below.
- Chicken Breasts – boneless, skinless
- Ranch Seasoning Mix
- Au Jus Gravy Mix
- Butter- salted
- Pepperoncini Peppers – drained
How To Make Slow Cooker Mississippi Chicken
I’ll walk you through the basics of how to make this 5 ingredient crock pot Mississippi chicken! It really doesn’t get any easier than this.
PREPARE CHICKEN
Start by placing the raw chicken breasts in the bottom of the slow cooker and sprinkle the top with the ranch seasoning mix and the au jus gravy mix.
Place the butter on top. No need to slice it! Add the peppers on top of the chicken.
COOK CHICKEN
Cook on low heat for 8 hours for the most tender chicken. Lower heat for a longer amount of time makes it pull apart so easily!
SHRED CHICKEN
When the chicken is ready, carefully shred the chicken with two forks. It should pull apart easily.
PRO TIP: Do not add any extra water, broth, or pepperoncini juice to the slow cooker. The chicken and butter will create their own gravy as it cooks.
Is Mississippi Chicken Spicy?
A lot of people worry that the peppers will make this dish too spicy. I personally don’t think it makes the chicken spicy, but rather gives it a nice kick of flavor.
Check the spice level of the peppers, they do come in different levels of heat, so purchase mild peppers for a more mild flavor.
Can I Add Vegetables?
Yes! Bulk up this easy crockpot chicken by tossing in some chunky sliced carrots and baby potatoes. No need to add any extra liquid!
For more tender veggies and potatoes, add them in with the raw chicken right at the beginning.

Guy would like to use chicken thighs in this recipe. What are your thoughts?
Shawn
Yes! You can definitely do it with chicken thighs. I would just make sure to trim any excess fat before placing the chicken thighs in the slow cooker.
Robin
Would this be a good chicken to use on tacos?
Catherine
I couldn’t quite give it a 5 and I was trying to give it a four and a half. The taste of this is absolutely delicious. However, there is not enough gravy for me to spread all over my mashed potatoes. So I’m going to have to take the au jus which is left in the crock-Pot and make more gravy. Other than that, this is absolutely delicious. And I know this is not the only place I’ve seen this recipe word for word. So and I would probably rate all the other ones the same cuz there’s not enough gravy for me.

I’ve been making the Mississippi Pot Roast for my family and they love it. So when I saw the recipe for Mississippi Chicken I knew I had to make it. What a huge success!!! They like the chicken better! In fact that’s what we’re having tonight for supper! Thanks!!
Charidy
So easy and so good! I keep sneaking bites before dinner time. Thanks for making my Monday easy

This recipe is killer! SO MUCH BETTER than Mississippi Pot Roast!
I’ve made it every week in January and have served it on crusty hoagie rolls, with mashed potatoes, rice, and with seasoned “stove top pan taters”. My current fave way is on a roll.
Thank you so much for this tasty – and super easy – recipe! Love your blog!

Can you pretty please use the actual title of the Instapot mode instead of just “heat” when you send out these recipes? This is one of the most challenging things about Instapot posters. They don’t use the actual mode name but some random way of stating a cooking level. Would be SO helpful if you could use the exact Instapot mode name. Thank you!

This recipe is cooked in a slow cooker or “crock pot”. “Heat in low” is simply turning the dial to low tempature setting. Regarding instant pot settings, all of the specific preset settings are just plain stupid, if you ask me. They are all different, based on the brand, or even the model of instant pot you have, so saying a particular preset setting, i.e. poultry, soup, rice, egg, etc. would be really confusing! Most every instant pot recipe I have seen states to cook on low or high, and for a particular time. Your instant pot should have a general setting that just turns on the unit, mine just says “pressure cook”. After selecting that, I can then select high or low pressure (most things are cooked on high pressure, when in doubt, just leave it on high), and the cook time. If you are still unsure of how to use your basic instant pot function, I would suggest looking up a YouTube video on how to use your specific brand and model.

Question before making: is topping Cilantro or parsley? I’ll come back a rate after I make this. Have to purchase pkg mixes since don’t have on hand. Thank you! Looks good plus easy!!
Shawn
The garnish shown is parsley. You don’t have to use that if you don’t want, I just like it because it adds a bit of freshness and a pop of color to the final dish.

I’d like to make this without the Au Jus mix (chemicals).
Could you tell us how to substitute our own spices?
Janet
If you’re that worried over “chemicals” wouldn’t you do your own research ago make your own mix.
