How To Make Chicken Stir Fry
Just like any good stir fry, there are three main components – the sauce, the protein and the veggies.
Each has its own moment in the spotlight, but all three come together quickly to make an unforgettable dish.
- SAUCE: Combine the simple, yet flavor-packed sauce ingredients in a small dish and set that aside.
- PROTEIN: Thinly slice the chicken breast and marinate it with a little cornstarch, soy sauce, red pepper and salt.
- VEGGIES: Cook your veggies first, getting them nice and charred in a hot wok over high heat.
To prepare your chicken stir fry, you’ll start by marinating your chicken first, create your sauce and THEN start the cooking.
Since stir fries come together so fast, you want to make sure all your ingredients are prepped and ready to go so nothing gets overcooked.
Once your veggies are cooked to your liking, you’ll remove them from the wok and set them aside.
Add another tablespoon of Land O Lakes® Butter with Olive Oil & Sea Salt to the wok and toss in the chicken.
Cook the chicken until it’s browned and cooked through, stirring frequently. Next, you’ll add the green beans and onion back to the wok.
Finally, stir in the sauce and let it heat through and thicken slightly.
That’s it! Dinner is ready!
Tips On Cutting Juicy Chicken for Stir Fries
There’s a special trick when it comes to cutting up chicken for a stir fry so you don’t end up with tough, chewy chicken.
When you slice the chicken, cut against the grain of the meat in thin strips.
This will create tender strips of chicken that cook quickly and taste amazing!
Tips For Making a Quick Stir Fry
Like I mentioned above, my #1 tip is to have everything prepped and ready to go BEFORE you actually start to cook.
Here are a few more tips and ways to modify the stir fry to your liking…
- Use a lid and cover the green beans and let them steam for a few minutes to make them softer to the bite.
- If you like it extra saucy, try doubling the sauce and adding in an extra cornstarch slurry at the end to thicken it up.
- Keep a tub of Land O Lakes Butter with Olive Oil & Sea Salt handy for quick dinners like this.
- Want it less spicy? Reduce or omit the red pepper flakes.

This is a keeper! Delicious; thank you!!! Everyone loved it!
My only changes were substituting 1/2 cider vinegar, 1/2 water for the sherry (as suggested by another commenter), used three times the amount of onion (and I’ll use even more next time), and added some leftover red pepper I had on hand – and next time I’ll add more… perhaps 1-2 red peppers, because it combined perfectly. Oh and I way reduced the sugar…maybe 1/4 tsp? Just because I already get too much elsewhere in my diet lol.

Wow this was REALLY delicious! Made it for dinner tonight and added carrots, red, yellow & orange mini peppers and mushrooms. I did substitute the Dry sherry with 1 tbsp water and 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar as I read in one of the comments since I didn’t have that on hand. All the flavors were perfect and coating the chicken in cornstarch, red pepper flakes and soy sauce took it to another level. I served it over coconut rice and sprinkled it with sesame seeds. NOM NOM NOM NOM. This is definitely going into our dinner rotation. Healthy and delicious. THANK YOU!

Tried this for first time tonight and it was delicious! So much flavor. My husband has never been a fresh green bean fan but he liked this so much he had seconds. We both said this will be a regular dish for us. I didn’t have the Sherry on hand so I substituted chicken broth. Worked beautifully. Thank you for this recipe. It’s definitely a keeper!

We love this for our family- just tried it a couple weeks ago and have made it 2 more times! I made another pan with more veggies (red/ yellow peppers and mushrooms and additional onion) with the same seasoning for the green beans for my guy and our kids that aren’t so picky- so delish! Going to try adding some of a bag in of shredded carrots next time as well! BUt for 3 of our kiddos who are sooooo picky the original is PERFECT!!
Jem
Can I freeze this dish?
Shirl
The sauce is so good! I’ve made this many times. One change I’ve made, is I stir fry the beans by themselves for about 7-8 mins with the cover on. Moving the beans around often, so they don’t burn. Then I add the onions and cook without the cover for about 5 mins. Beans come out soft, but not mushy and still a bite to them. Also, cutting the chicken against the grain as the recipe video shows, is key to having tender, moist chicken.

I felt like the sauce was very vinegar forward. I will probably use half the vinegar next time.
Shawn
Thanks for your comment Sharyl!
