What Kind Of Bread Is Best For French Toast?

The easiest bread to get ahold of is a loaf of french bread, and this will work just great. You can also use sourdough, challah, brioche, or any other type of hearty bread with a mild flavor to it.

You’ll want to stay away from using thin sandwich bread slices for this casserole, as it wont hold up well in the french toast bake.

  • Try to find a loaf of bread that you can cut into cubes that are about 1 inch.
  • Stale or dry bread will work great in overnight bakes because it’ll really have a chance to soak up the egg mixture.

Overnight French Toast Bake

Once you’ve got the egg mixture over the bread, you’ll whip up a super easy brown sugar crumble. This stuff really takes the french toast casserole to the next level!

Cover the casserole dish with plastic wrap and pop it in the fridge overnight or for at least 4 hours.

Can You Reheat Baked French Toast?

Yes! If for some reason you happen to have leftovers of this delicious casserole, you can definitely reheat them!

  • You can reheat individual slices of french toast in the microwave until headed through.
  • My personal favorite way to reheat french toast is in my toaster oven, so it gets nice and crispy on the top again.

Instructions

The Night Before:

  • Lightly grease a 9x13" casserole dish and place cubed bread in an even layer in dish. Set aside.
  • Whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, maple syrup and vanilla extract in a large bowl until mixture is pale yellow. Pour mixture over the bread, trying to coat each piece of bread.
  • In a separate small bowl combine the topping ingredients and use a fork or pastry cutter to combine, until mixture is coarse and crumbly. Sprinkle mixture evenly over bread. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and place in fridge overnight (or for at least 4 hours).

In the Morning:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Unwrap casserole dish and bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until middle of casserole is set. If the top begins to brown too much, lightly lay a piece of foil over the top and continue baking until finished.
  • Let sit for a few minutes before slicing and enjoying!

  1. I printed the recipe to serve 24 people, when I was looking it over it says just 1 9×13 pan? How can that all fit if the single recipe is 1 pan?

    1. If you change the serving size of the recipe it doesn’t change the pan size in the recipe. You’ll have to change that to scale the recipe. So for 24 servings on this recipe you’ll need 2 (9×13″) pans.

I made this for dinner tonight and everyone loved it. I made it early in the morning and put it in the fridge for about 5hrs. My husband had seconds and my 3 girls had a heaping plate full. Definitely a keeper. I made the recipe exactly as written. There are more recipes from you that we be trying as well. Keep up the awesome work.

    1. Bagel bread would work great! I would just make sure it sits long enough in the egg mixture so it’ll soften the bread enough.

OMG! This is so delicious. I made it for a ladies brunch and had to print out the recipe for all 5 guests. SO easy and SO good!

This recipe was a huge hit with friends who had requested French toast casserole. We loved the topping. Super easy to make with straightforward instructions. Thank you for a fabulous and delicious recipe!

  5. This was very good ! But I have a question ? It is Sapose to never soggy ? Mine was crispy on top and sort of soggy towards the bottom ? Is that normal ? Or do I have to let it bake longer ? Thank you !

    1. The bottom will have a more custard-like consistency with a crisper top. If you want to cook it all the way through and don’t want it too crisp on top, towards the end lightly cover with foil and keep cooking until the bottom is more dried out.

    1. If your bread is not very stale, you could get away with cooking right away, but letting it sit overnight will allow the egg mixture to soak into all the bread and give it a better texture once baked.

    1. I’ve never tried this version in the crockpot, but I think it could work as long as it was cooked on low.

    1. Hi Cindy, I’m thinking you could bake this and then freeze leftovers for a later date. To reheat I would keep covered with foil and bake at 350 degrees until heated through.

    1. I used Private Selection, although any brand of “grade A, amber” real maple syrup will work.
