Best Fruits for Fruit Salad
- Strawberries
- Fresh Pineapple – I love this pineapple slicer
- Blackberries (or blueberries)
- Red Grapes
- Kiwi
- Fresh Mandarin Oranges – you can also use canned, but I find that the fresh stay together better in the salad.
Fruits to Avoid in Fruit Salad
- bananas (brown quickly)
- apples (unless treated)
- watermelon (too watery)
These particular fruit are all the colors of the rainbow, so this salad would be perfect for any rainbow-themed parties or St. Patrick’s Day.

Creamy Fruit Salad Dressing
I really wanted to create a luscious and creamy dressing without going the route of anything too heavy or too sweet. I wanted to make sure that the fruit really had a chance to shine.
After some testing, I opted for a plain Greek Yogurt (I used non-fat, but you can use full fat if desired) for the creamy base. I sweetened it with a little honey and gave it just enough zing with a little lime juice and lime zest.
It’s not a super thick dressing, just enough to give the fruit a little something special.

How to Make Fruit Salad Ahead of Time
Being able to prep this salad ahead of time is great for when you’re planning for a party. You can prep this fruit salad ahead of time, but there are a few things you should keep in mind.
- Keep the sliced fruits separate from each other until you’re ready to combine the whole salad.
- Prepare the dressing ahead of time and keep refrigerated in a closed container.
- Combine the salad just before serving for optimal freshness and flavor.
- As the fruit salad sits, it’ll become more juicy as the fruit breaks down (macerates) in the dressing.

Fruit Salad FAQ
Yes! I recommend storing the fresh fruit and dressing separate and mixing together once ready to serve.
A fresh fruit salad can usually last up to 2 days in the fridge when stored in an airtight container, depending on the fruit used. More hearty fruits like grapes and apples can hold their texture and consistency better than more delicate fruits like berries.
To prevent watery fruit salad, pat the fruit dry with a paper towel before adding to the bowl. Avoid using watery fruits like: watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew as these contain a lot of water.
I do not recommend using frozen fruit for this type of fruit salad because once thawed, the fruit will break down and lose it’s texture – creating a mushy, watery fruit salad rather than one that is crisp and refreshing.
I personally love the creamy fruit salad dressing in this recipe that consists of greek yogurt, honey and lime juice. Some fruit salad dressing uses cool whip, which is also great, but lacks that extra protein from the greek yogurt.

I substitute sour cream instead of Greek yogurt or even the spreadable cream cheese, my family likes it much better that way, in fact I have to make a double recipe.
Any substitute for Greek yogurt?
