Spicy Air Fryer Salmon

Lately I’ve been obsessed with making sushi bowls for a quick lunch at home. I combine imitation crab meat with some kewpie mayo, sririacha hot sauce and a dash of sesame oil to create that signature spicy California roll flavor.

I decided to spread that same sauce mixture over a fresh salmon filet and cook it in the air fryer and it was seriously delicious.

  • Salt and Pepper

How To Make Spicy Air Fryer Salmon

Don’t be afraid of the term spicy in this recipe, you have complete control over how hot you want to make it. It’s more of a nod to the spicy salmon sushi roll, since I love to serve this with sushi rice and nori snack wrappers.

Make Spicy Mayo Sauce

To make the creamy spicy mayo sauce, simply combine the kewpie Japanese mayo with your desired amount of sriracha hot sauce. Add in a little sesame oil to balance out the savoury flavor and stir it all together.

Coat Salmon with Sauce

Use a spoon to dollop on about a tablespoon of sauce per filet, then spread the sauce all over the top and the sides to coat it completely.

Season the salmon with salt and pepper.

PRO TIP: save some of the sauce for after it’s done cooking to drizzle on top of the cooked salmon.

Cook Salmon In Air Fryer

For easy cooking and clean up, place a sheet of parchment paper underneath your salmon in the air fryer basket.

This is my favorite Air Fryer to use so far.

Cook the salmon in a preheated air fryer at 400 degrees F. for 8 to 12 minutes. The salmon will get golden brown on the outside, while remaining nice and moist on the inside.

What temperature should Salmon be Cooked to?

The FDA recommends that salmon should be cooked to 145 degrees F to be safe to eat.

However – you can consume salmon at a lower internal temperature, with risk of foodborne illness. (Similar to the warnings they give you at a sushi restaurant when eating raw fish.)

Personally I prefer my salmon when it’s cooked to about 125 to 130 degrees F. The salmon is still very moist and flakes beautifully with a fork.

The instructions in the recipe will get your salmon to the safe point, but use an instant read thermometer for best accuracy.

What To Serve With Salmon

This spicy salmon begs to be served over a bed of warm sticky rice. Lately I’ve been purchasing these packs of microwavable sticky rice and stirring in a little rice vinegar after it’s cooked. I’ll work on a homemade sticky rice recipe to post on my site soon!

How To Store Salmon

When purchasing your salmon, make sure to look for freshness. Salmon should have a mild scent and firm flesh. Boneless salmon is easiest to prepare, but removing bones is not too difficult either.

Raw salmon should be prepared within 1 to 2 days of purchasing, otherwise, wrap tightly and store in freezer (up to 3 months) until ready to cook.

Store your cooked salmon in an air tight container for up to 3 days, but it is best when consumed within 1 day.

Instructions

  • Pat dry salmon filets and place on a piece of parchment paper in air fryer basket, skin side down (if skin is on).
  • Combine the kewpie mayo, sriracha and sesame oil in a small dish. Spread about 1 tbsp over each salmon filet, and then season with salt and pepper. Reserve remaining sauce for later.
  • Cook in air fryer at 400 degrees F. for 10 to 12 minutes, or until cooked to your liking. Salmon should flake easily with a fork when cooked. Serve salmon over rice with extra sauce on top if desired.
Notes
Salmon is considered safe to eat after it’s been cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees F. That being said, I do prefer mine more about 130 degrees as I find it’s still moist and delicious.
