Honey Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry

I’m a huge fan of the stir fry. It’s one of those dishes that I’ll constantly make at home to use up any leftover veggies in the fridge.

There’s always onion, usually peppers, and most of the time some sort of green veggie will make its way in there too. Using seasonal veggies in a quick-cooking stir fry is always my favorite thing to do. We’re using fresh asparagus here, but green beans, broccoli, or even snap peas would work.

Ingredients Needed:

Here’s the basic list of ingredients you’ll need in order to make this shrimp stir fry recipe. As always, you can find the full printable recipe located in the recipe card below.

  • Shrimp – raw, tails removed
  • Honey
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Butter
  • Asparagus
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Onion

How To Start a Stir Fry

As with any stir fry, you’ll want to start with a piping hot skillet and an oil/butter combination to sear the shrimp, while also giving it loads of flavor.

If you only use butter to start, you’ll run the risk of the butter burning. Adding oil in there will keep the butter from burning, but still give you a great taste.

Marinate The Shrimp

The sauce for the stir fry is just 4 ingredients – honey, soy sauce, garlic and ginger. Mix it all up and pour half of it over your uncooked shrimp, then set aside for about 15 minutes to quickly marinate. If you’re prepping ahead, the shrimp can marinate for up to 24 hours (just make sure you cover and refrigerate).

Reserve the other half of the sauce for later.

Cook Veggies First

You’ll sauté the veggies in some of the butter and oil first, then remove them from the skillet to a plate to keep warm.

PRO TIP: Allow the veggies to sit in the hot oil without disturbing for a minute, allowing them to char slightly. Once tender, you can remove them.

Sauté the Shrimp

Cook the shrimp in another tablespoon of butter with olive oil for just about 1 minute per side, until they get nice and caramelized and cooked through.

Add the veggies back in with the remaining sauce and toss to combine!

How To Thicken the Sauce

If you want a thicker sauce that coats the shrimp and veggies, simply stir together 1 tsp of cornstarch with 1 tsp of water and add this to the hot skillet after you’ve added the sauce ingredients. This will thicken the sauce.

What To Serve With Stir Fry

I like to serve this over some hot rice along with either a cup of Egg Drop Soup or some Crispy Chicken Egg Rolls. It’s a delicious takeout meal made right at home in just minutes!

I probably popped 4 pieces of shrimp in my mouth before it even made it to the table. It’s that good, guys!

Instructions

  • Place the cleaned shrimp in a bowl and set aside.
  • Combine the honey, soy sauce, garlic and ginger in a small bowl and pour half over the shrimp (reserve the other half for later), stir the shrimp to coat, cover and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile heat a large skillet (I prefer cast iron) over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tbsp olive oil. Once hot add in the asparagus, bell pepper and onion and sauté until crisp-tender and slightly charred (about 4 minutes). Remove from skillet to a plate to keep warm.
  • Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the skillet and then add the shrimp (discard any used marinade). Cook shrimp about 1 minute per side, or until caramelized and cooked through. Quickly add the veggies and reserved sauce to the skillet and heat through.
  • Serve over hot cooked rice if desired. Enjoy!

Notes
Feel free to substitute the shrimp with chicken or steak. Just make sure to cook until safe to eat.
To thicken sauce– once you’ve added the reserved sauce to the skillet, combine 1 tsp cornstarch with 1 tsp cold water and then pour into the skillet. Stir and the sauce should thicken quickly.

Yummy! Just made this tonight. Living in FL we have access to fresh shrimp and they were great. Loved the quick easy cook and cleanup. This recipe stays on my keeper list. Thank you!

The taste was awesome and I love finding meals where I can get full off a lot of veggies! I did however have an issue with there being so much liquid that I couldn’t get any char on the veggies or shrimp. What went wrong?

    1. If you find that there is a lot of excess liquid, you can drain that off to help get that char. Sometimes if the shrimp is not fully defrosted before cooking it’ll release a ton of liquid.

  3. We had some cooked shrimp I needed to use and fixed this. Still put it in the marinade for a few minutes then just added it it to the veggies. so good!!! If using pre- cooked shrimp again then would only use 1/2 of the marinade, since I had a lot of sauce left at the end.
even though we loved the sauce it was just too much. Could I have saved what was left of sauce and reused since shrimp had been cooked before marinading?

    1. If the sauce was mixed with cooked shrimp, you could save it, but I would probably err on the side of caution and toss it.

This was fantastic! I doubled the recipe as I was serving 5 adults, and not a bit was left! So I do question the recipe amount stating it is for 4 servings. Maybe if you are serving with other dishes. I served it with only rice and a small cucumber salad. The recipe gives excellent, step-by-step instructions and if you have all your veggies prepped before you start cooking it is a very easy meal to make. The sauce is soooo tasty! The only thing I would change is perhaps adding a little corn starch to the reserved sauce to thicken it up slightly.

    1. You can definitely thicken the sauce on this one with cornstarch at the end. So glad you enjoyed the recipe!

Looks great we make something very similar sometimes with chicken also and we use riced cauliflower in place of real rice ,so good !!!

  6. I added snap peas with the other veggies in the recipe. The sauce had a good flavor but I thickened it with a cornstarch mixture. Did anyone else find they had to do that?

This was excellent!!!! It was so fast and easy to prepare. My husband and I loved it. The only thing I did different was added halved cherry tomatoes at the end when I put the veggies back in with the shrimp. Boy oh boy this is a keeper and will be a great dinner selection for company. Thank you!!!!!!

    1. Love that you added in cherry tomatoes at the end, I bet that was awesome! Thanks for the comment and feedback Jane!

This was by far one of the most delicious meals that my family and I have ever had so quick and easy to prepare I also made a chicken version because my daughter-in-law can’t or won’t eat seafood (so sad for her, imagine no shrimp, shuddering right now lol), but she loved the chicken. I also added in some sesame oil and parsley absolutely delicious, definitely will be making this again thank you for sharing.

REVIEW…Let me start by saying this was one of the easiest meals I’ve put together…I did get the shrimp marinading at lunch time but putting the a sauce together was less than 2 min…I also cut the asparagus and washed at lunch time but the pepper and onion took no time to slice…the rice was a microwave pouch of brown rice…
That being said…it was a 10* meal!!! SERIOUSLY! I had all I could do not to eat the second portion…I didn’t use the butter she did but did half olive oil and half butter for each thing…veggies first then shrimp…I cut the honey amount by a third and would cut it more next time…but quite honestly it really was good as it was….you can be sure SURE!! I will be making this again…I love the veggie combo…you can do your own thing but this combo is excellent…I don’t like red pepper but decided to stick to the recipe and am so glad I did…SCORE!! PLEASE if your a stir fry person try this….as is …then you can embellish but it’s EXCELLENT!!! Wish I could post a photo of mine….it was SO pretty!

    1. So glad you enjoyed the recipe Martha! You can always take a photo and share it on Instagram, then tag me (@iwashyoudry or #iwashyoudry) and I’ll be able to see it!

Wonderful recipe. I would maybe cook the asparagus before the other veggies but it still turned out great. Would also be tasty with chicken or other meats

  11. This recipe looks so good. I am going to make this soon. I can’t have shrimp so I am either going to use steak or chicken. Maybe even make some with steak and some with chicken! Looks delicious!!

  12. Hi! I know your recipe calls for shrimp but i was wondering if I’d be able to use chicken instead? Im pregnant right now and apparently my partner is nervous about the mercury in shrimp.

  13. I made this tonight. It was really good. I used an Aloha pepper which made it extra special!

  14. I made this today and it was delicious! I forgot to buy the Land of Lakes butter with olive oil so I used I Can’t Believe It’s Butter and I added 1 tbsp of olive oil to it in the skillet. Turned out perfect! I will definitely make this one again

  15. This was excellent — very delicious and very colorful! I will definitely be making this easy recipe again.

  16. I made this last night and my husband loved it! I added a cup of sliced mushrooms (just because we love mushrooms)and my husband suggested maybe adding some cashews next time for a little extra crunch. I would think this would be easy to switch out veggies as well like broccoli or zucchini for something a bit different. Very versatile!

  17. Made this tonight and it was Delicious!! I added mushrooms and doubled marinade for extra sauce over the rice. Whole family have it a !

  18. This got an A+ from my family, and it’s simple, healthy, beautiful and delicious. I used the shrimp, but also a sliced chicken thigh for the granddaughter who doesn’t like seafood.

  19. This is one tasty stir fry and soooo easy to do ,thanks for a wonderful recipe i will be doing this again real soon cant wait to try steak as the sauce is delicious and i will add mushrooms

  20. I made this this weekend and it was delicious!! Looked just like the pictures. So pretty and so tasty! I don’t buy Land of Lakes with the oil so just used regular Land of Lakes and it worked perfectly fine. I will make this again many times. We loved it.

  21. Ah, what a beautiful colorful dish!! I love stir-fries too! Adding it to our menu this week. Oh and LOL butter is my go to!!

    1. I start with frozen deveined shrimp and run them under cool water to defrost. I peel back the shells and then pinch off the tails while running under cool water. Hope that helps!
