Ingredients Needed

Here’s a basic list of ingredients you’ll need in order to whip up these French Toast Sticks. As always, you can find the full list of ingredients located in the printable recipe card below.

  • Brioche Bread -The brioche will bring a fluffiness and sweetness to the french toast. You could also use regular sandwich bread if desired.
  • Eggs– Creates a custard base for the french toast batter.
  • Heavy Cream & Milk – the heavy cream gives the custard base a nice rich consistency when balanced out with the milk. You could swap both out for equal parts half and half.
  • Flour– This helps thicken the batter, creating an even crispier crust when frying
  • Vegetable Oil– you’ll need about 2 cups to help create that crispy crust.
  • Sugar – just a little for added sweetness.
  • Vanilla Extract

How to make French Toast Sticks

As you’ll see this recipe comes together in minutes, follow along below.

Heat oil over stovetop

In a medium sized saucepan add oil until its roughly 2-3 inches deep. Heat on medium-high heat. You want oil to be approximately 350 degrees F when frying. I love using my instant read thermometer to make sure it’s at the right temperature.

Whisk together batter

In a shallow bowl whisk together the flour and a couple tablespoons of the milk to create a paste. Add the remainder of the ingredients and whisk until well incorporated. Mixing it this way will prevent the flour from clumping up in the batter.

Cut bread into sticks

Cut bread into 1-1.5 inch wide sticks. If you desire, you can cut off the crust.

Dip the sticks & fry

Dip the sticks into the batter and let excess drip off. Slowly place into the oil making sure to not splash the oil. Add 3-4 sticks at a time into the oil. Flip when golden brown and continue frying on other side. Remove once both sides are golden brown.

Let cool & enjoy!

Once sticks are golden brown, remove from the oil and place on a plate lined with paper towels. Serve with your favorite syrup, jam, or fruit!

Tips and Suggestions

BREAD- You can use multiple types of bread for this recipe. Brioche can bring a fluffier, sweeter finish to the dish. If you’re like me and never have anything else besides sandwich bread on hand that’ll work as well.

TOPPINGS– Pair with your favorite syrup, in my opinion, nothing is better than buttermilk syrup. It bring a light warm taste to the dish while leaving the french toast sticks as the star.

MIX INS- For an additional variation to this dish add cinnamon, nutmeg or maple syrup to your batter to give it a little more spice and depth.

    1. Hi Valerie, You could always try a canned coconut milk for the cream part, and maybe a coconut milk beverage or almond milk for a regular milk substitute? Let me know how they turn out if you try them! 🙂
