How To Make French Onion Beef and Rice
One taste of this French Onion Skillet Sauce and I knew I wanted to incorporate it into an easy one-pan dinner. The sauce is savory-sweet which compliments the beef and rice perfectly.
CARAMELIZE ONIONS Start by caramelizing your onions in a skillet over medium-high heat. Drizzle a little bit of avocado oil in the bottom of the pan and stir the onions occasionally until they’re golden brown and giving off a nutty aroma.
BROWN GROUND BEEF Remove the onions from the pan and add in the ground beef, breaking it up until it’s crumbled and brown. Drain off any fat and return the pan to heat.
ADD SEASONINGS Once the beef is cooked, add in the garlic and seasonings and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
BRING TO A BOIL Add in the uncooked rice, beef broth, French Onion Skillet Sauce, caramelized onions and frozen mixed veggies to the ground beef mixture and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat, cover and let cook until rice is tender.
STIR IN CHEESE Once the rice is tender, fluff with a spoon and then stir in the shredded cheese. Serve with a bit of extra cheese on top if desired.
The best thing about cooking the rice in this manner is that it absorbs all the delicious flavors, making it one heck of a tasty dish!
Each bite is sweet and nutty, hearty and savory, plus it’s filled with veggies, ground beef and rice… it’s a complete meal in one pan.
What’s not to love about that?!
What Makes It French Onion?
You might be wondering what makes this recipe more “French Onion”, rather than just “Onion”?
I’ve taken a slew of hints from the classic French Onion Soup and used that to create this one pan casserole with beef and rice.
ONIONS – a traditional French Onion soup uses yellow onions to create that sweet caramelized onion flavor.
BROTH – we’re cooking the rice mixture in a hearty beef stock, similar to the base of a French Onion Soup.
CHEESE – by adding in the nutty Gruyére cheese to the beef and rice mixture, it gives this casserole the balance of sweet and nutty, similar to the soup.
To give us even more French Onion flare, we’re adding in the French Onion Skillet Sauce from Tastefully Simple, which really brings it all together.

Note. You don’t have to follow a recipe exactly!!! Use what you have!
i made this minus the cheese and peas because i didn’t have. It was amazing!!! There wasn’t a drop left. It made 4 big portions including lunch for tomorrow!
Adjustments:
Onions Seasoning:
Lawrys seasoning and garlic plus to onions.
Ground Beef seasoning:
1 tablespoon Soy Sauce and 1 Tablespoon (or even amount) Asian Rice Vinegar
Montreal steak seasoning, sprinkle of Maldon salt, lawry’s seasoning salt, chili flakes, italian seasoning in the beef, and a bit of tumeric for color and flavor with the sauteed onions and ground beef at end, then added rice with chicken broth. I did it in a wok so everything in one pot.

Thank you for showing that adapting the recipe to one’s taste isn’t a crime! We can learn just as much from viewers sharing their versions as we can from the original poster. Thanks to everyone for sharing their ideas!
I’m planning on making this soon!

Never mind what the folks up there say about this recipe I think it’s easy to make If anyone ever heard of hamburger helper? Then you would make this rice dish just like you cook hamburger helper.you first cook your meat and onion till done drain fat, Then add rice soup (or water)veggies and cook until the rice is done, top it off with cheese and EAT! No Complaints,No Fuss Either,OH This is From Someone That Isn’t Like Me (And You couldn’t one in a million)That given a problem, something without the instruction sheet.Could figure it out and get it right Or Sometimes create something that NO ONE Would’ve thought of.
Christine
Can you tell me the serving size
Sandra
I really like your recipes and looked at this one till I scrolled down and seen all theses brand name products I have never heard of, that turns me off
Rebekah Thomas
Use what you have it doesn’t have to be name brand
Adriena
I am also on a fixed income. I want to make this but let me other comments… I can’t afford the spices. Would you PLEASE respond as to what would the substitutions be. I honestly want to make but just need answers for the spices and sauce. Thank you so much.
Rachael
We don’t have that brand so I used Mrs. Dash onion and herb seasoning and 1/2 c beef broth mixed with liption onion soup mix to replace sauce. I think it turned out delicious
Peg
Just made this and it is delicious! I received the French Onion skillet sauce along with other TS products as a Christmas gift. I’m glad I found your recipe. I’ll be ordering more of the sauce and making this recipe again. Thanks for sharing!
Shannon
Nice of you to profit from overpriced garbage but I really was excited for a good recipe. Sad.
Rinad
What are other options for seasonings?
sheila doiron
Looks like this is out of the question for everyone as these spices are not available here in Nova Scotia Too bad as i really wanted to try it hopefully you could offer some substitutes
Anthony
You could experiment using lipton french onion dip mix. I plan on giving that a go soon. Think of recipes as a framework and use creativity to alter it within the framework.

I’m guessing you’re profiting from pushing Tastefully Simple products. Many people cannot afford, nor find these products. Maybe consider either listing common substitutions, or stick to sharing recipes with common ingredients. Sorry….I’d give you an F on this posting.
Liz Rising
Sorry you feel like that Rene. But this is how I’ve learnt to cook over the years. If I see an ingredient I don’t recognize or have access to I google& read up on it to understand what substitutions will work for me in my situation. The original poster can’t possible know where their post will end up. It’s up to the viewer themselves to work that out. I’m just grateful that people continue to post their ideas of meals that have worked well for them. And if they earn a few bucks from suggesting a particular brand then that’s fine. Otherwise you’d have to pay to view their content which you now get for free! Hoping you try this one w/ your own additions & give them your feedback.

I really need certified gluten free ingredients! I have to make substitutions for all gluten and most dairy ingredients; I’m pretty sure that others do, too! The specified name brand isn’t specific about ingredients or whether caution is needed in order to avoid cross contamination. Also, prices are outrageous for those of us with low income or retired and trying to survive on SS. I’m sure your recipes are best as written, but unfortunately, not for all of us with food sensitivity!
Debbie Espersen
I agree with the above comments. I was actually going to buy two of the recommended spices but even using your code, by the time the shipping charges were added it was going to cost me a little over $30 for two spices. That is just a little out of my budget for two spices for one recipe. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Sherry
It would be much appreciated if you could advise susbtitutes for the name brand items that many of us (me included) cannot find in our local stores.
debbie heuston
Wow some rude people commenting, if you can’t afford the ingredients, substitute or look for a different recipe.
Nishani
Wow! Why is everyone so aggressive in the comments. I can’t help but adress it lol. Anyone who cooks, knows you can find substitutes for whatever ingredient/seasoning you need. It’s called Google or simply ask the writer what substitutes they will recommend. Not need to bite her head off!! She’s sharing how she thinks it’s made best and so what if she may have a affiliate deal with the brand she’s using, if it taste good it tastes good. Get out her pockets. You want recipes for free, this is how it works. I think someone said they would give her an F, lol what is wrong with people??
Linda Jones
This recipe looks absolutely scrumptious. The only problem I have is the special seasonings and sauce. I am retired and of course on a budget. I cannot afford the special seasonings at almost $10 a jar. Would love to as they look very good, but just cannot do it. Would you have a list of seasonings to use for this recipe, seperately? I have most every seasoning in my cabinet. I am sure I would have most, I just need to know what they are for this dish. I really want to make this dish! Thank you for any help in this.
naenia
Sound tasty but also sound like your either the owner of tastefully simple products, have stock in it or are making some sort of profit by advertising it. It would be easy to just mention basic ingredients like pepper or onion salt or powder of French onion soup. I’m guess this is the ingredients basic names although it’s hard to tell the names are not exact. Can you label the actual item not a brand? That would be awesome if you can.
Paula B.
I would love to make this but can’t find Tastefully Simple products. Can you provide substitutes? Thanks for your time!
Anthony
How about Lipton French Onion Dip Seasoning packs? That is pretty cheap and easy to find.
Pat Drenowatz
Please give us recipe that we don’t have to go hunt down name brand seasonings OR give us options we can use
Amy
I noticed the Tastefully Simple French Onion skillet Sauce has soy sauce with gluten, how can I work around this? Or do they have a gluten free version?
Anthony
No rudeness intended here but this is something you could definitely research yourself. I am sure there is a gluten free alternative that works or perhaps you could come up with one on your own.
Brenda
Can’t wait to add this to my rotation of one skillet meals. I love them all. So quick and easy and I usually have everything I need on hand.
