How To Make Cream Cheese Wontons

  1. MIX: To make cream cheese wontons, simply combine the filling ingredients in a bowl and mix until incorporated.
  2. FILL: Spoon about 1 full teaspoon of the mixture onto the center of a wonton wrapper.
  3. FOLD: Use your finger to dab the edges of the wrapper with water and pinch the seams together tightly so the filling can not escape.
  4. FRY: Dunk the wontons in hot oil, and cook until golden brown and crispy.

PRO TIP: Wonton wrappers can dry out pretty quickly if left exposed to the air. Use a damp paper towel to cover the stack of wrappers while you’re preparing them.

Tips and Variations –

When it comes to making these cream cheese wontons, or crab rangoon, they are super simple and straight forward.

Here are some tips and variations to make sure you have a great success…

  • FOLD – there’s no wrong way to fold a wonton, as long as you’re making sure you fold it nice and tight, so none of that creamy goodness can escape.
  • WATER OR EGG –  you can use water or a beaten egg to seal the wonton wrappers.
  • FILLING – If you’re not into crab meat, you can easily leave that out. Feel free to get creative with the filling – bacon, cheese, sausage, shrimp, etc. Just don’t overfill them!
  • OIL – use either vegetable oil or canola oil for frying and a thermometer to check that the temperature is consistent at 350 degrees.
  • BAKE – Not into frying? No problem! You can bake these wonton wrappers at 350 degrees F. for about 10 minutes, until golden brown.
  • AIR FRYER – Try these in your air fryer, preheated to 400 degrees F. for just 6 minutes, turning halfway through.

  1. That looks absolutely delicious ! If you didn’t have crab meat ,what other could you use that pairs with the soy sauce in the recipe please ?

  2. Since I have to follow a gluten free diet (CD). I use Schar’s phillo dough instead of wonton wrappers and they work great. They do fry up quickly.

  3. Thanks so very much for this recipe! I love love love crab rangoon and can’t wait to make them. This recipe looks far easier than I thought and am very pleased to know I can bake them.
