What Is Tzatziki Sauce?
Tzatziki [pronounced: tuh·zee·kee] is a yogurt based sauce that consists of cucumber, dill and lemon juice. It’s light and refreshing and perfect for adding on grilled meats, gyros, and even using as a dip or topping.
If you ever go to a Greek restaurant, it is always on their menu. Now you can make this simple sauce at home!
Simple Tzatziki Sauce Recipe
This easy cucumber sauce comes together in minutes with just a handful of ingredients.
Ingredients Needed
Here’s the basic list of ingredients you’ll need in order to make this cool and creamy Greek Tzatziki Sauce. As always, you can find the full list of ingredients located in the printable recipe card below.
- Plain Greek Yogurt
- Cucumber – preferably English cucumber
- Lemon
- Dill – fresh or if using dried dill- use half the amount listed
- Garlic Powder
- Black Pepper
- Salt
How To Make Tzatziki Sauce
Tzatziki sauce is as simple as combining all the ingredients in a bowl, stirring and serving.
When it comes to the cucumber, you can either use a cheese grater to shred it, or finely dice it with or without the peel.
PRO TIP: Make sure you squeeze as much liquid out of it as possible, or your sauce can become pretty watery.
I’m using garlic powder for my easy Tzatziki Sauce because I don’t really like biting into fresh, raw garlic, as that can be a little overpowering. If you’re a fan of fresh, raw garlic, you can definitely add that in place of the garlic powder.
What Can I Use In Place Of Greek Yogurt?
Ideally, you’ll use a thick PLAIN Greek yogurt to make Tzatziki sauce, but if you do not have this, you do have a couple more options…
One of my favorite swaps for plain Greek yogurt is Sour Cream. This has more of a tang to it, so you might not need as much lemon juice. Just taste as you go.
You could also use a plain yogurt, but strain the yogurt in a coffee filter in the fridge overnight to thicken it up a bit.
How To Thicken Plain Yogurt
- Place a coffee filter in a strainer and pour in your plain yogurt.
- Place the strainer over a larger bowl and allow it to sit in your fridge for 24 hours.
- The whey (cloudy/yellowish liquid) will drain off through the coffee filter and you’ll be left with a much thicker yogurt.
How Long Does Tzatziki Sauce Last?
You can prepare this Tzatziki Sauce up to 5 days in advance. Store it covered in the fridge, and stir again before serving.
I personally think the flavors get better after 24 hours of sitting in the fridge, so if you can make it in advance go for it!
What To Serve with Tzatziki Sauce
I know it sounds crazy, but my all time favorite thing is to dip Salt and Vinegar Chips into this Tzatziki Sauce. Trust me, it’s so good! Here are some more delicious options…
- Fresh cut veggies like carrots, cucumbers, radishes, celery, etc.
- Grilled Chicken Souvlaki Pitas
- Gyro Meats
- Spanakopita (spinach pies)
- Greek Grilled Salmon
- Lemon Roasted Potatoes
