You guys, this past week has been a crazy one.
We are getting used to our new baby chicks and loving every moment of it. They’re super fluffy and adorable, but they’re starting to get their feathers and lose that fluff so I thought I should snap a few photos of them before they grow out of that cute baby phase.

We got three different breeds of chickens – 2 white leg horns (the yellow chick), 2 Rhode Island reds (the brownish/red chick), and one Aracauna (the darker brown chick). The Aracauna breed is supposed to lay multicolored eggs, like pink, blue, and green. The classic white eggs are going to come from our leg horns and we’ll get brown eggs from the Rhode Island reds.
I don’t normally let the chicks wander around my kitchen. They poop way too much for that. But I wanted to get some good pictures, and this was the only place I could think of.
Originally I was going to take them outside and let them play in the grass in the warm sun to snap their “baby chick pics”… but then it decided to no longer be 75 degrees and sunny outside. Nope, our gorgeous spring-like weather turned south real quick.
I woke up this morning to 4 inches of snow on the ground.
This is what my backyard looks like right now. You see those gorgeous pink blossoms?
Yeah, those popped open a couple days ago when it was nice and toasty outside.
It was so beautiful out there that I had to snap a few pictures. Plus, this area of the world doesn’t typically get snow, so it was worth documenting.
And then while I was out there taking these pictures (freezing my buns off), I decided we needed to have soup for dinner.

Way back in the early 1980s, long before you were born, I’m sure, we raised our own chickens, as well. When they were young we always welcomed them into our home…once they were grown. and living in the back yard, I would let our dog out in the morning and open their hut for them to wonder…well, one we called mama, would follow the dog back into the house, and make herself comfortable under the kitchen table whilst we enjoyed breakfast. She never once was a bother and when she grew old, we took her to a friends farm to end her days, in the sunshine with all of their animals. Strange I know, but we loved her dearly and I still often think of her.

Oh my gosh, I love you for thinking I wasn’t born in the early 80’s. 🙂 And how adorable about your sweet chicken. It’s very apparent how much personality each one of these little chicks already has. One of them, Daisy, is our curious little lady. She is so interested in everything and always the first one to try new things out. She is definitely the leader of the group. I wish we could have kittens too, but my kids are super allergic to them. The chickens are the next best thing and bonus – we get free eggs! 🙂

Your chicks are cute, the Arucana do lay colored eggs but their smaller than the others. Years ago my sister-in-law raised the same ones you have plus some Polish Crested; she had a total of 6 different types of chickens. She gave a name to every single chick and she could tell which one was which and within a week of getting them they knew their name and came running when she called them by name. We gave each of ours names too. It’s funny because we can already tell them all apart very easily. I’ll work on talking to them more and telling them their names so they’ll come to me when I call them. That would be super fun! 🙂

I went to high school at an agricultural technical school. We always had pigmy goats and baby chicks to play with and take care of. When I have my own home someday, I hope to have chicken because I love eggs and animals. Are those cherry blossoms?? I’m jealous. I haven’t seen grass or flowers in months.

Oh man, that would be so fun! I’m not 100% sure (because we just barely moved in a few weeks ago) but I think they are peach blossoms. But they do look a lot like cherry blossoms! 🙂

Our snow melted already. I feel your pain though. I just moved from Canada where they got 6 feet of snow in just a few days! I don’t miss that at all! Hopefully it starts to warm up soon for you!
