It can be a mess if you’re not careful. You could end up popping all the sweet arils and causing what looks like World War 3 in your kitchen. The deep red with stain almost anything it touches…

A bowl of pomegranate seeds.

It’s simple- really.

Start off by putting down a few paper towels to prevent your cutting board from being stained.

Lop off the top and bottom of the pomegranate.

Submerge the pom in a large bowl of water. While holding it underwater, gently pull the sections apart where they were scored.

See all the goodness inside!?

Still underwater- use your thumb or finger to gently push the arils out of the membrane. Keep it submerged in case any want to pop on ya. You may pop a few, but with around 600 arils in one pom…whats a few?

After you clear all the arils from the membrane you’ll have floating membrane on top of the water. The arils sink to the bottom, allowing you to scoop off the top floating membrane pieces.

You can discard the membrane.

  1. Have you seen the youtube tutorial using a spoon to rap it on the back? All the seeds pop out? It’s awesome! I’ve seen your way before too. Nice pictures as usual!

    1. I have not seen that. I love doing it underwater cause it’s virtually mess free. I wonder if I could hit it with a spoon underwater?? haha

  2. I remember my first time cutting into a pomegranate. My kitchen was a bloody mess – just like you mentioned. Thanks for the brilliant suggestion of taking the seeds out in water!

  3. Thanks for this. I had my hand on one yesterday but put it back because I wasn't sure how to get all the yummy goodness out.
