So you got yourself one of these “power fruits” called a pomegranate and now what?
How do you get inside of this beautiful thing and get to the tangy and tart goodness of the actual fruit?
It can be a mess if you’re not careful. You could end up popping all the sweet arils and causing what looks like World War 3 in your kitchen. The deep red with stain almost anything it touches…
It’s simple- really.
Start off by putting down a few paper towels to prevent your cutting board from being stained.
Lop off the top and bottom of the pomegranate.
See the bright color of the juice?
Yum!
Take your knife and score the side of the pomegranate, from top to bottom.
Make 4 cuts around the whole fruit.
Submerge the pom in a large bowl of water. While holding it underwater, gently pull the sections apart where they were scored.
See all the goodness inside!?
Still underwater- use your thumb or finger to gently push the arils out of the membrane. Keep it submerged in case any want to pop on ya. You may pop a few, but with around 600 arils in one pom…whats a few?
After you clear all the arils from the membrane you’ll have floating membrane on top of the water. The arils sink to the bottom, allowing you to scoop off the top floating membrane pieces.
You can discard the membrane.
Drain off the remaining water, stand back, and marvel at the ruby gems in your palm.
I had big plans for this pomegranate.
That is until The Man and the children got to them. {until next time pom…until next time….}
Here are a few ideas you can use the pomegranate for –

Have you seen the youtube tutorial using a spoon to rap it on the back? All the seeds pop out? It’s awesome! I’ve seen your way before too. Nice pictures as usual!

I remember my first time cutting into a pomegranate. My kitchen was a bloody mess – just like you mentioned. Thanks for the brilliant suggestion of taking the seeds out in water!

I love pomegranate arils in guacamole. It's supposedly very traditional – and it looks very Christmassy. Yum
